Care Profile

The Korean Hornbeam (Carpinus turczaninowii) is a highly favored deciduous bonsai known for its dense branching habit and excellent seasonal display. It is one of the best species for developing fine ramification (twig density) due to its quick growth and tendency to produce short internodes. Korean Hornbeam leaves are small, serrated, and turn brilliant shades of gold, orange, and red in the autumn. As a temperate species, it is extremely hardy and requires a mandatory cold dormancy period in winter. It thrives in full sun and demands frequent watering during the growing season due to its vigorous nature and high rate of transpiration.
