Hawthorn
Beginner Level
Care Profile
The Hawthorn (Crataegus species) is an excellent choice for temperate climate bonsai, fitting squarely into the Beginner-to-Intermediate difficulty level. Its hardiness, tolerance for heavy pruning, tendency to develop attractive fissured bark quickly, and production of small white flowers followed by red berries make it highly rewarding. Hawthorns require full sun for vigorous growth, dense foliage, and optimal flowering/fruiting. As a deciduous species, it requires a mandatory cold dormancy period during winter. Water thoroughly when the surface of the soil begins to dry, as it is moderately thirsty but resilient. Pruning is straightforward: it back-buds reliably on old wood, allowing for structural cuts in winter and simple clip-and-grow refinement during the growing season. Repotting is best done every 2β3 years in early spring, and its robust root system tolerates heavy pruning well.
