Caring for Dawn Redwood - Metasequoia Bonsai

Though redwoods are hardy, several environmental or care-related factors can stress the tree.

Caring for Your Dawn Redwood Bonsai

When the leaves (needles) of a Dawn Redwood bonsai begin turning brown or dying, it’s important to act quickly. Though redwoods are hardy, several environmental or care-related factors can stress the tree. Here’s how to identify and fix the problem:

1. Watering

Dawn Redwoods need consistently moist soil. Even short periods of dryness can cause stress and browning.

Solution:

  • Check the soil daily, especially in warm or dry conditions.
  • Water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom of the pot.
  • Avoid letting the soil dry out completely.

2. Humidity

  • Use a humidity tray (a shallow tray with pebbles and water) under the pot in Hot Conditions.

3. Sunlight and Heat

Dawn Redwoods prefer bright, indirect sunlight. Too much harsh afternoon sun can scorch the needles.

Solution:

  • Place where it gets morning sun and afternoon shade.

4. Feeding

A lack of nutrients—especially nitrogen—can cause weak growth and browning.

Solution:

  • Use a balanced bonsai fertiliser (liquid or slow-release) diluted to half strength
  • Reduce or stop fertilising in winter when the tree is dormant.

5. Pests and Diseases

Common pests include spider mites and aphids; fungal diseases can also occur in damp, stagnant air.

Solution:Ensure good air circulation around the bonsai.

6. Seasonal Needle Drop

Dawn Redwoods are deciduous conifers, meaning they naturally shed their needles in late fall.

Solution:

  • Light browning and shedding in autumn are normal.

7. Repotting

Dawn Redwoods grow vigorously, and their roots can quickly fill a pot. Regular repotting prevents root binding and maintains soil health.

Guidelines:

  • Young trees: Repot every 2 years in early spring, just before buds begin to open.
  • Mature trees: Repot every 3–4 years or when root growth slows.

8. Soil Mix

The ideal soil mix retains moisture but drains well to prevent root rot.

Recommended Bonsai Soil Mix:

  • 50% Akadama (for moisture retention and nutrient exchange)
  • 25% Pumice (for aeration and drainage)
  • 25% Lava Rock (for structure and long-term stability)
